Get To Know Doodles:
Grooming

Keeping your Doodle’s coat healthy and beautiful involves regular grooming. A well-groomed Doodle is happier and more comfortable.

Brushing

Regular brushing with a slicker brush is important. It’s designed to handle the Doodle’s dense and often curly coat effectively. The goal is to brush all the way down to the skin. Other brushes only brush the top part of the fur. You will also need a stainless-steel comb to be able to pass through down to the skin. If brushing doesn’t get down to the skin, your dog may develop matts. This is very uncomfortable for your dog and can cause irritation and pain. To avoid matts, and the subsequent shave, thorough and regular grooming is necessary. We are happy to recommend other grooming tools that have worked well for our Doodles.

Baths

Doodles don’t need frequent baths. A bath once a month, or when they get particularly dirty, is sufficient. Bathing too often can strip the coat of its natural oils, causing it to become dry and dull. Use a gentle, dog-specific shampoo to maintain the pH balance of their skin.

Haircuts

Depending on how quickly your Doodle’s hair grows, they’ll need a trim every 6-12 weeks. Their facial hair, especially around the eyes and mouth, may need more frequent trimming.

We use these products for haircuts:

Nail Trimming

Don’t forget about the nails! Regular nail trims keep your Doodle comfortable and prevent potential health issues. With our younger puppies, we use “human” nail clippers. As they grow, we move into nail grinders. It takes repetition to get your dog comfortable with nail trimming.

Ear Cleaning

Doodles can be prone to ear infections because of their floppy ears. Regular checks and cleaning are necessary to keep their ears healthy. Make sure to avoid getting water in their ears during bathing time. These wipes also work for a quick cleaning.

Remember, the type of coat (curly, wavy or straight) and the size of your Doodle (Standard, Medium, or Mini) will affect your grooming routine. Adapting your grooming routine to your Doodle’s specific needs will ensure their coat remains in top condition.
